Der Hunger wird als Waffe eingesetzt und aktiv von den westlichen Verbündeten Israels unterstützt. Darauf macht uns mit einer dringlichen Mail Karen Krättli aufmerksam, eine NachDenkSeiten-Leserin aus der Schweiz. Sie schreibt:
„Liebe Redaktion der Nachdenkseiten, ich wende mich in grösster Sorge über die  Hungerkatastrophe in Gaza an Sie. In den mir bekannten deutschsprachigen Medien wird kaum adäquat über die Konsequenzen berichtet, die die Aussetzung der Unterstützungszahlungen seitens der Westmächte an UNRWA hat bzw. haben wird. Ich frage mich, wie und ob es überhaupt möglich sein wird, die Öffentlichkeit aufzurütteln.

Deshalb habe ich hier im Folgenden die wichtigsten englischsprachigen Artikel und Berichte dazu zusammengestellt. Vielleicht wollen Sie diese als Hinweise publizieren, wegen der äussersten Dringlichkeit aber wäre vielleicht auch eine redaktionelle Aufbereitung und Einordnung der Rolle Deutschlands darin, die in den englischen Artikeln so nicht vorgenommen wird, notwendig.“

Um keine Zeit zu verlieren, verzichten wir auf die redaktionelle Aufbereitung und veröffentlichen im Folgenden die Hinweise und Quellen von Karen Krättli, leider nur in englischer Sprache, aber mit einer deutschen Einführung:

1. Unless Israel changes course, it could be legally culpable for mass starvation

   Gaza is on the brink of famine. If the US and UK fail to use every possible lever to stop the catastrophe, they will be complicit

   Gaza is experiencing mass starvation like no other in recent history.

   Today, almost all Gazans, of any age, anywhere in the territory, are at risk.

   There is no instance since the second world war in which an entire population has been reduced to extreme hunger and destitution with such speed. And there’s no case in which the international obligation to stop it has been so clear.

   The IPC’s famine review committee is an independent group of experts who assess evidence for the most extreme food crises, akin to a high court of the world humanitarian system. The committee has already assessed that the entirety of Gaza is under conditions of “emergency”. Many areas in the territory are already in “catastrophe”, it said, and might reach “famine” by early February.

   Never before Gaza have today’s humanitarian professionals seen such a high proportion of the population descend so rapidly towards catastrophe.

   More than a month ago, the famine review committee wrote: “The cessation of hostilities and the restoration of humanitarian space to deliver this multi-sectoral assistance and restore services are essential first steps in eliminating any risk of famine.” In other words, an immediate end to fighting is essential to prevent a calamitous toll that may far exceed the numbers killed by violence.

   That’s the operative line. For the survival of the people of Gaza today, it doesn’t matter whether Israel intends genocide or not. Unless Israel follows the famine relief committee recommendations, it will knowingly cause mass death by hunger and disease. That’s a starvation crime.

   And if the US and UK fail to use every possible lever to stop the catastrophe, they will be complicit.

   Auch Deutschland als einer der Hauptunterstützer Isreals hat die Zahlungen an UNRWA eingestellt und ist damit Komplize dieses unfassbaren Verbrechens.

4. When the West Collectively Punishes Gaza by Suspending Funding to UNRWA
   (Amira Hass, Haaretz 4. Februar 2024)

   Amira Hass zu den Konsequenzen, die die Einstellung der Unterstützungszahlungen an die UNRWA haben wird.

   Suspicions that 12 UNRWA employees participated in the October 7 massacres resulted in 15 Western countries punishing all the residents of the Gaza Strip – currently the world’s most severe humanitarian disaster zone.

   Based on evidence provided by Israel backing up these suspicions, the United States, followed by Japan and European countries, were quick to announce their suspension of contributions to UNRWA.

   Fifteen countries, headed by the U.S. and Germany, are signaling that they view the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip less seriously than the suspicions raised by the evidence regarding 12 of the agency’s employees, and that reducing or halting this mass disaster is less urgent than pleasing their ally, Israel.
